“Wonder Woman” contributes to changing Hollywood’s perspective on women
With the rising popularity of “Wonder Woman,” the superhero movie that is said to have surpassed other blockbusters, Gal Gadot’s name has also sparked curiosity among cinema enthusiasts. It was not a coincidence that the former Miss Israel was chosen for the weighty role in the film directed by acclaimed Patty Jenkins, who previously achieved success with “Monster” (2003), starring Charlize Theron, and became the first female filmmaker to direct a superhero movie. The producers could have easily gone for the typical American, young and fiery female lead archetype commonly seen in superhero movies. However, in the end, a 32-year-old Israeli actress was chosen to play the iconic character of Wonder Woman.
Gal Gadot, the stunning beauty who once held the title of Miss Israel, faced numerous rejections during her early acting career. It seemed like the “mobile flower” curse had taken hold of her career. She only managed to land a few supporting roles, notably in “Fast & Furious” and in the critically panned “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” (2016), where her performance as the former beauty queen overshadowed both Batman and Superman.
She was disheartened when she lost the Bond girl role to actress Olga Kurylenko in “Quantum of Solace”. These constant failures almost made her give up acting altogether. However, after beating out Kurylenko for the role of Diana in “Wonder Woman”, which was recommended by renowned producer Zack Snyder, the former Miss Israel still faced obstacles in her path.
